Visitors note the abundance
of art as they visit the main office and walk through the corridors,
(known as “streets” or Rehov in Hebrew), lobbies,
atrium, synagogue, library. The artwork of our students become a
permanent part of our landscape. We also proudly display the work
of professional Cincinnati artists, who have served as Artists in
Residence or who have donated their work to our school community.
Boymel Synagogue, the spiritual center of the
school, is named in honor of Sam and Rachel Boymel. It is illuminated
by seven splendid stained glass windows
depicting Creation. The windows were designed by Greta Lee Splansky,
wife of Rabbi Donald Splanksy, formerly of Temple Sholom of Cincinnati
and now of Framingham, MA.
The seven days of creation are also the theme
of our magnificent donor dedication
wall in the Boymel Lobby. Artist Suzanne Fisher served as Artist
in Residence, using pottery, china and pots donated by our families
to create seven colorful mosaic panels. Our beautiful signature
Rosh Hashana greeting cards are illustrated with the mosaic images.
All of the signage throughout the facility is
punctuated with colorful ceramic discs painted by the students using
themes from the biblical story of creation ( or B’reishit
in Hebrew). Some of these discs have been replicated on note cards
and gift enclosure cards.
Student mosaic art work enhances the streetscapes:
Bible stories (Boymel Lobby), the Twelve
Tribes (Rehov Eden), Mosaic “Yad”
and Star
of David (Heiman Lobby).
The mural in the Zipkin
Middle School Student Lounge was created by eighth grade students
as a Legacy Gift, under the direction of Cincinnati muralist Nancy
Illman. Ms. Illman also donated the murals in the Preschool.
